Rourkela: In a surprising development, a large number of highly educated candidates appeared for the Home Guard recruitment test held in Rourkela Police District on Monday.
Though the job required a minimum educational qualification of Class 5, candidates with higher educational qualifications, including BTech, MBA and MCA degrees, reportedly appeared for the test. The aspirants also included many diploma holders and
Officials said that a total of 9061 candidates appeared for 107 posts of home guards in 22 police stations across Rourkela Police district.
Such a large number of highly qualified aspirants appearing for the posts has become a topic of discussion in the region as the home guard job offers a daily wage of Rs 612, which amounts to Rs 18,360 per month. Despite the modest pay and basic eligibility criteria, the turnout for the recruitment drive reflected the growing desperation for employment among the youth.
The recruitment process began early in the morning at Sector-6 Ispat Stadium, with a 30-minute paragraph writing test for 20 marks starting at 7.30 am. This was followed by a general knowledge test of 40 marks lasting an hour from 8.30 am. There was also a 2 km walk test in the afternoon and then a personal interview.
