Rourkela: The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT-R) is set to extend scholarships to about 2,000 students in the 2026-27 academic year, as part of a strengthened effort to help meritorious learners from economically weaker backgrounds access quality technical education.
Institute records indicate a steady climb in both the number of students receiving aid and the count of funding agencies over the past four years. In 2022-23, 857 students were supported by 25 agencies; this rose to 1,299 students from 32 agencies in 2023-24. In 2024-25, 1,571 students received help from 45 government and private bodies, and in 2025-26 the figure increased to 1,670 students through 62 scholarship providers, as reported by The New Indian Express.
To reach more students, NIT-R is actively engaging big companies and is working to sign MoUs with well-known firms such as Groww, the Adani Group and Rupa Bajaj, along with other industry partners, so that additional funds can be directed to meritorious but financially needy scholars.
According to Registrar Prof Rohan Dhiman, dedicated scholarship programmes exist for students from SC, ST and OBC categories, those belonging to the economically weaker section, and women. Such awards typically take care of tuition, hostel fees and other academic-related expenses.
Dipti Ranjan Das, assistant registrar (Academics), noted that the funding pool draws from several streams—allocations by the Central and state governments, support from the corporate sector, and contributions from the institute’s alumni.
