Bhubaneswar: A major crackdown was launched by officials of Odisha’s Directorate of Drugs Control on the illegal sale of abortion kits in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
As per sources, the raid was conducted in Nayapalli area of the capital city and a medicine store was found allegedly selling abortion kits without the required prescriptions from registered medical practitioners in violation of laid down guidelines.
During the raid, conducted by a three-member team from the Directorate, several abortion kits were recovered from the store. Further investigation is in progress.
Officials said the raid was part of a broader drive to check the misuse of medications like misopristol, which is often used without medical supervision and involves serious health risks. The crackdown will be further stepped up to curb the illegal use of abortion kits.
Noting that Misopristol as a medication has severe side effects like heavy bleeding and other complications, they said it should never be sold without a prescription. This medication should only be taken under the supervision of a medical practitioner.
Appropriate action will be taken against the medicine stores found selling the abortion kits after thorough probe, the officials said, adding that licences of these shops will also be suspended if required after they are issued with a show cause notice.
