Bhubaneswar: As people across Odisha gear up to celebrate the festive season, the weather department has sounded an early alert regarding a potential new weather system brewing in the Bay of Bengal.
According to the latest meteorological assessments, a fresh low-pressure system is likely to take shape around mid-October, raising concerns about possible rains during Dussehra.
Renowned meteorologist Dr Surendranath Pasupalak noted that while global weather models like ECMWF and GFS clearly indicate the formation of a system in the Andaman-Bay of Bengal region, it is currently too early to predict its intensity, exact track, or potential landfall.
“This is currently a monitoring phase for a potential cyclonic circulation. While the environment is becoming favorable for system formation, predicting whether it will intensify into a depression or a cyclone is premature right now,” Dr. Pashupalak explained.
At present, there is no immediate or credible threat to Odisha. Most initial signals point toward southern trajectories. However, weather analysts caution that if the system tracks further north or if multiple models converge toward the north Andhra-Odisha coast, concerns for the state could escalate.
Citizens and festive organisers are advised to keep a close watch on weather updates between October 12 and 15. More concrete forecasts regarding the storm’s path and intensity are expected to emerge after October 5.
Key Timeline:
- October 12: A cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the North Andaman Sea.
- October 13: A low-pressure area is anticipated to develop over the Andaman Sea.
- October 15: A weak depression may potentially form over the south-central or central Bay of Bengal
