Baleshwar: High tension arose in Baleswar’s Oupada area on Gandhi Jayanti after residents discovered an alleged cow slaughter and meat trafficking ring near a forest settlement.
The illicit trade’s suspected tentacles stretch across Mayurbhanj and neighbouring regions, triggering widespread public outrage and demands for a high-level investigation.
Residents performing morning routines near Devagiri Hill noticed a foul smell and discovered wrapped meat packages, animal hides, and hooves. Concluding it was beef, hundreds of villagers gathered to protest.
When local officers arrived, angry residents briefly blocked their vehicles, prompting additional police forces from neighbouring stations and two platoons to deploy under senior officials’ supervision.
According to the complaint filed by cattle owner Nini Mani Naik, a cow and its calf had been handed over to Ananta Hembram of Mahalia Sahi for rearing. The accused and his associates allegedly slaughtered the calf, packing over 40 kg of meat for distribution and trafficking. Police have detained Ananta Hembram along with seven other suspects, seized several motorcycles, and launched a thorough investigation into the network.
