Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced and initiated several development projects in the capital city on the occasion of Local Self-Government Day, with a focus on improving civic amenities, waste management, drainage infrastructure and living conditions for residents.
One of the key initiatives is the state’s first pet crematorium, which is set to become operational soon. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to inaugurate the facility, providing residents with a dedicated and dignified facility for the cremation of deceased pets.
The BMC has prepared a comprehensive master plan to improve the city’s drainage system in collaboration with IIT Roorkee. Under the first phase, priority interventions have been planned in areas including ISKCON, Bomikhal, Rudrapur Canal and Naharkanta.
Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have already been prepared, while the tender process for the ISKCON drainage project has also been completed.
Compressed biogas plant to ease waste management pressure
The civic body is also planning to complete a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant by the end of this year. The facility is expected to reduce the pressure on Material Collection Centres (MCCs) by processing waste more efficiently.
The BMC will also enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the proposed waste-processing plant, which will be implemented in accordance with directions from the state government.
The BMC has also taken up plans to upgrade several major markets in the city. Bhagabanpur, Badagada, Unit-4 Market and Tarini Market have been identified for development and improvement.
Meanwhile, construction of the street food hub at Pahala will also be expedited to provide better facilities for street-food vendors and visitors.
The state government is working towards making Bhubaneswar a slum-free city, with the BMC preparing plans to provide permanent housing and addresses to slum dwellers.
The initiative aims to ensure that residents currently living in slums can get access to permanent pucca houses and improved living conditions.
The BMC has also planned several infrastructure projects for the Daruthenga area. Road development, parks, a Kalyan Mandap and drainage infrastructure are among the projects being taken up.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to lay the foundation stones for several of these projects as part of the Local Self-Government Day programmes.
In another major civic initiative, 30 public toilets across Bhubaneswar will be equipped with Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
The treated water will be made suitable for reuse, helping reduce water consumption and promoting sustainable management of wastewater in public facilities.
BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana said the civic body is undertaking multiple initiatives to improve urban infrastructure and public services in Bhubaneswar, with emphasis on sustainable waste management, drainage, sanitation and better civic amenities.
