Baripada: Two people were killed and three others sustained critical injuries early Tuesday morning after an unidentified vehicle rammed into a tractor near Chhuruni Square on NH-18 in Baripada of Mayurbhanj district.
According to reports, the incident took place around 5 am near the Betnoti police limits and has sparked concerns over road safety on this busy stretch.
Sources reported that five labourers were travelling on a tractor en route from Baripada to Balasore for work when an unknown vehicle collided with their vehicle. The impact was so severe that the tractor was split apart and was completely mangled.
Two of the passengers died on the spot, while the other three were left severely injured. The identity of the vehicle owner responsible for the crash remains unknown, as it fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Preliminary investigations suggest that all five victims were migrant workers from outside Odisha, specifically from Karnal in Haryana and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. They were employed by a private contractor based in Balasore.
Sources mentioned that the group was reportedly heading to a work site when the tragedy struck.
Upon receiving the alert, personnel from the Betnoti police station rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations. The injured were first taken to the Betnoti Community Health Centre and later shifted to the Baripada Medical College and Hospital due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Meanwhile, police from Baisinga also arrived to recover the deceased bodies and begin a formal investigation. Efforts are underway to identify and trace the vehicle responsible for the fatal crash.
