New Delhi: An Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashed near Ahmedabad Airport. As per the police, chances of survivors cannot be ruled out. The London-bound flight AI 171 crashed moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane took off at 1:38 PM and crashed near the airport five minutes after takeoff.
Ahmedabad police says stated it cannot rule out the chances of survivors after a London-bound passenger plane with 242 on board crashed Thursday. A British national, Vishwash, has been reported as one of the survivors of the Air India plane crash.
Meanwhile, speaking to Reuters, Ahmedabad police commissioner has stated that a total of 204 bodies have been recovered from the crash site.
The plane, en-route to London, crashed in a residential area, five minutes after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Gujarat. Visuals of the plane crash circulated on social media show plumes of dark smoke in the sky.
Among the 242 passengers, 169 passengers were Indians, 53 were British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian.
PM Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation and ordered rescue and relief operations. Civil Aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah rushed to Ahmedabad to assess the situation.
