Odisha Cabinet clears seat reservation for SEBC students in admissions

Bhubaneswar: In a major decision taken at the State Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the Odisha government cleared a proposal for reservation for Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC) students in admissions into Educational institutions.

While making the announcement, Odisha CM Mohan Majhi said, “The SEBC category students will get 11.25 % seat reservation in admission. This policy will be implemented from the current academic session.”

“The Odisha State Cabinet has approved a landmark decision to introduce 11.25% reservation in admission for students belonging to socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC) in State Public Universities, State Government and Aided Higher Secondary and Higher Education Institutions under the School & Mass Education Department, Higher Education Department, Odia Language, Literature & Culture Department and Sports & Youth Services Department’s starting from the academic year 2025-26,” a press release from the govt stated.

As per the govt, this initiative ensures uniform implementation of reservation in admission for students belonging to ST (22.5%), SC (16.25%), SEВС (11.25%), PwD (5%) & ESM (1%) reservations in all State Public Universities, State Govt and aided Higher Secondary and Higher Education institutions under the School & Mass Education Department (for HSS, Teacher Training & Vocational Courses), Higher Education Department (U.G, P.G, Teacher Education, LL.B., Integrated Law Courses), Odia Language and Literature & Culture Department (Bachelor in Performing Arts Course) and Sports & Youth Services Departments (B.P.Ed. / M.P.Ed. Courses) of the State Government.

“I would like to term this decision as historical as it is for the first time that such a step has been taken. Earlier, none of the past government thought it right and their duty to take this decision in favour of the backward classes. We have been raising this demand in various forums. I would like to thank the Chief Minister and PM Narendra Modi for understanding that for the holistic development of the country, the development of backward classes is necessary,” said Odisha BJP leader, Surath Biswal.
