JSW Steel holds awareness programme on new labour codes in Odisha

Keonjhar: JSW Steel Ltd’s Odisha Mining Division hosted an extensive awareness session on the new labour codes at its Narayanposhi Iron & Manganese Mines in Barbil. The initiative aimed to enhance employees’ understanding of the latest labour law reforms introduced by the Government of India.

The session was led by the Regional Labour Commissioner (Central), Rourkela, and the Labour Enforcement Officer (Central), Rourkela. Over 200 participants—including workers, staff members, and associated personnel—attended the programme, which focused on the practical implications of the four key labour codes. These included: Code on Wages, Social Security Code, Industrial Relations Code and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code.

The officials provided in-depth explanations on each code, highlighting critical aspects such as standardized wage definitions, timely salary payments, mechanisms for dispute resolution, employee rights, and the importance of workplace safety and welfare.

The Regional Labour Commissioner underscored the mutual advantages of adhering to the new codes and cautioned against non-compliance, noting that implementation guidelines would be released shortly.

The session also covered essential statutory requirements, including the issuance of appointment letters, identity cards, and proper maintenance of employment records. Special emphasis was placed on promoting gender equality, empowering women in the workforce, and ensuring compliance with industry-specific regulations, such as the applicability of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in mining operations.

Prominent JSW Steel representatives in attendance included Chitaranjan Bahinipati (HR Head, Odisha), Tapan Kumar Rath (Mines Manager, Narayanposhi), and Prakash Hati (Welfare Officer). This initiative underscores JSW Steel’s ongoing commitment to fostering a compliant, inclusive, and employee-focused work environment.
