Govt takes all measures to protect paddy from pre-monsoon rains

Bhubaneswar: As IMD predicts the onset of pre-mansoon rain in the state, the government takes all measures to protect paddy from the rain during current Rabi procurement in the State. Various places in the State also witness unseasonal rain.

In view of this, significant measures have been taken by the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare department ensuring protection of paddy at mandis. In this regard, a meeting was held under the co-chairmanship of Managing Director of Odisha State Civil Supply Corporation K. Sudarshan Chakravarthy and Registrar of Cooperative Societies Shri Siddharth Das through a virtual medium where District Civil supply officers, Deputy Registrars of cooperative societies and other senior officials participated.

Keeping in view of  the rains, necessary preventive measures have been taken by the Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Department to continue the paddy procurement process ensuring the safety measures. The officer concerned were also asked to sensitize the farmers on proper storage of harvested paddy at safe locations. The precaution is essential to prevent damage from anticipated rainfall, said MD Shri Chakravarthy. He also instructed to accelerate evacuation of paddy from mandis in coordination with millers ensuring all stocks are covered with high quality tarpaulin sheets to prevent exposure to rain and moistures. They were also asked to ensure proper drainage system around the storage areas.  Farmers have been made aware and informed about the rain in advance. Additionally, millers have been instructed to lift the paddy on priority basis.

In addition to this, Chakravarti has given instructions to ensure temporary shelter, drinking water, and O.R.S. facilities at each Mandi. It has been discussed in the meeting to keep a sharp vigil through CCTV and with being watchful on vehicles carrying paddy from Mandi to mills.

Among others, General Manager, PDS Shri Sudhakar Sabar, Procurement General Manager Ellora Samal and Administrative General Manager Mrs. Pranati Priyadarshinee Rout were present.
