Rayagada: A solar-powered library modelled on community learning centres in Brazil emerged as a new educational landmark in Rayagada district, bringing modern learning infrastructure to the tribal-dominated Ramanguda block.
The innovative ‘Pathan Kendra’, established at Penakam panchayat, has drawn attention for combining educational development with sustainable energy use. The facility was developed as part of an effort to improve learning opportunities for students in one of the district’s relatively backward regions.
Designed on the lines of group study centres seen in progressive rural areas of Brazil, the library provides an open and student-friendly environment for learning. The centre is fully powered by solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted lighting even during power outages, a common challenge in many rural areas.
The Ramnaguda block administration spent Rs 4.5 lakh on constructing the solar-powered facility. The interiors are designed with a modern appearance, featuring wall artwork and glass-enclosed bookshelves. A wide range of books for competitive examinations, general knowledge and literature are available free of cost for students and young readers. The facility generated considerable interest among local students, many of whom now use the centre for study during evening hours.
Gouri Kandhapani, a student, said, “We are happy to have a library like this because it is helping us in our studies. There are many books available here, including books for competitive examinations. This initiative by the government is helping us study and build our future.”
A local resident said, “This facility is benefiting many students, especially those from humble backgrounds. Even when there is no electricity, studies are not disrupted.”
Akshay Panda, a local book enthusiast, said, “Many students from tribal areas do not usually have access to resources needed to build their future. This library has books that can help them prepare for competitive examinations, along with other books that can strengthen their knowledge.”
Ramanguda BDO Pradyumna Mandal said, “Following the instructions of the Rayagada Collector, this library was built based on the Brazil solar-powered library model. Students can come here and study at any time. It will help build a better future.”
The administration believes the project, the first of its kind in Rayagada district, could become a model for similar educational initiatives in other backward regions.
