Three die of suffocation inside septic tank during centering removal

Rayagada: At least three people died after allegedly suffocating inside a septic tank while carrying out construction-related work in Rayagada district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Hari Chandra Bir (46), Alok Karada (45) and Prakash Lima (47). Two of them were reportedly masons, while the third was a daily wage labourer. The mishap occurred at Tarpaguda village under Padmapur police limits.

According to reports, the three men entered the septic tank in the afternoon to remove centering materials and clean the structure. They reportedly fell unconscious after being exposed to poisonous gases and inadequate oxygen inside the confined space.

On being informed about the incident, a fire services team from Padmapur reached the spot and rescued the three men from the tank. However, all three had reportedly succumbed to asphyxiation.

Padmapur police later reached the spot and launched an investigation into the incident. Further details are awaited. The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the area. On receiving information, local MLA Satyajit Gamang also visited the spot.
