Bhubaneswar: A significant clinical trial in the field of treatment for focal seizures, a form of epilepsy, has been successfully completed at Sparsh Hospitals and Critical Care Private Limited here recently. The Principal Investigator (PI) of the study was Prof. (Dr.) Suryaprakash S. Choudhury, who is a noted Neurologist.
The Phase-III which includes multicentre, randomized, double-blind, and parallel-group clinical trial, evaluated the efficacy and safety of Cenobamate tablets as adjunctive therapy in patients with focal seizures, in comparison with Eslicarbazepine. The clinical trial was part of a multicentre study conducted at 17 sites across India.
In Odisha, apart from Sparsh Hospitals, only AIIMS Bhubaneswar had received approval to participate in this study. Following the clinical evaluation of the trial, the relevant committee recommended approval for the manufacture and marketing of Cenobamate tablets in different strengths—12.5 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg and 200 mg, as mentioned in the relevant documents.
Contribution of Dr. Choudhury
As the Principal Investigator of the study, Dr. Choudhury led the conduct of the trial and patient monitoring at the Bhubaneswar site. The participation of a centre from Odisha in an international-standard Phase III multicentre clinical trial represents an important development for the state’s clinical research sector.
Dr. Choudhury said that many patients with focal seizures require long-term medication. Generating scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of new anti-seizure medications can help provide patients with additional treatment options.
Gratitude has been expressed to the patients, the research team, all the staff and associates of Sparsh Hospitals, and LifeSan Clinical Research for their valuable support in the successful completion of the study.
Contribution to International Clinical Research
As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Choudhury has been actively involved in global and international clinical trials and has contributed to research on new medicines and treatment approaches in the field of neuroscience.
He has successfully completed more than 10 clinical trials. These research studies have covered a wide range of complex and rare neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, migraine, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), peripheral neuropathy, motor neuron disease (MND), anxiety disorders, and other neurological conditions.
In addition, several clinical research projects related to new medicines and treatment approaches are currently under review or at various stages of development.
Through his extensive experience in international clinical research, Dr. Choudhury has contributed to the generation of evidence-based data concerning the safety, efficacy and clinical utility of new medicines and therapeutic approaches.
It is also noted that, for his work in clinical research as a Principal Investigator, he has received various honours and recognition from international researchers and clinical research organisations at different times.
His experience and research contributions in clinical research projects involving new neurological medicines in India have established him as an experienced Principal Investigator. His experience in clinical studies involving new medicines following DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India) approval also carries significant importance.
Dr. Choudhury’s contribution to clinical research is notable in the areas of developing new medicines and treatment approaches, promoting evidence-based neurological care, and helping make new treatment options available to patients.
