Bhubaneswar: Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy paid heartfelt floral tributes to the legendary freedom fighter, social reformer, and pioneer of women’s rights, Maa Sarala Devi, on her death anniversary near the Assembly premises in Bhubaneswar.
Offering her respects at the statue of Maa Sarala Devi located adjacent to the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Speaker Surama Padhy highlighted the immortal legacy of the visionary leader, describing her as the quintessential symbol of women’s empowerment in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Padhy recalled Sarala Devi’s historic role as the first woman Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Odisha. She noted that Sarala Devi not only led from the front during India’s freedom struggle in Odisha but also dedicated her entire life to female literacy, social awakening, and overall community development. Her selfless dedication, social service, and noble ideals continue to inspire generations, the Speaker added.
The commemoration ceremony was attended by key political figures and dignitaries, including Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, senior officials from the Department of Odia Language, Literature & Culture, prominent intellectuals, and social workers, all of whom joined in paying homage and sharing memories of Maa Sarala Devi’s invaluable contributions to Odisha’s heritage.
