Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s dairy cooperative OMFED will increase the milk procurement price paid to farmers by Rs 2 per litre from September 11, providing additional income support to dairy farmers amid rising input and transportation costs.
The decision has been taken in view of the sharp increase in the cost of dairy production, particularly the rising prices of cattle feed and other essential inputs.
According to the government, the increase in global oil prices has significantly pushed up production and transportation costs across the agricultural and livestock sectors. Dairy farmers have also been facing growing financial pressure as the cost of various inputs required for milk production has increased.
Raw materials used in cattle feed, including maize, mustard oil cake, rice polish and de-oiled rice bran, have reportedly registered price increases of more than 25 per cent. The prices of cattle feed, fodder and other essential materials have also gone up.
Considering the increased cost burden on dairy farmers, Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (OMFED) has decided to raise the procurement price by Rs 2 per litre, ensuring that farmers receive a higher return for the milk supplied to the cooperative.
Gokulananda Mallik, Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, said the decision was taken after considering the rising cost of milk production and the financial pressure faced by dairy farmers.
The increased procurement price will come into effect from September 11. The move is expected to provide some relief to dairy farmers and strengthen the state’s dairy sector by improving returns from milk production. The government is also seeking to support farmers amid continued increases in feed, fodder, transportation and other operational costs.
The procurement price revision is aimed at ensuring greater economic sustainability for dairy farmers while encouraging continued milk production and strengthening the cooperative dairy network in Odisha.
