New Delhi: The WAVES Film Bazaar has become an important platform where Indian stories meet the global film industry. The journey of ‘Neelu’, an Indian animated feature film, shows how this platform helps creators turn ideas into international collaborations.
What started as a pitch at the Film Bazaar Co-Production Market has now grown into a major co-production involving Spain, France and Belgium.
‘Neelu’ is directed by Saraswathi Buyyala and has been developed over four years with deep personal commitment. The project was first presented at the Film Bazaar Co-Production Market in 2023. At this early stage, it received valuable guidance and support from industry experts such as Anu Singh, Vivek Krishnani, Dora Babu, and Mike Yattam. Their feedback helped strengthen the project and prepare it for global opportunities.
The film is set in India and tells the story of a young tribal woman who stands up against a female foeticide plot. Through animation, ‘Neelu’ addresses this serious social issue with emotion and sensitivity. The film combines a strong message with powerful storytelling, showing how Indian stories rooted in local realities can connect with audiences across the world.
A major breakthrough came when European producers Xavier Yamamoto and Simon Barrionuevo joined the project. With their involvement, ‘Neelu’ became an official international co-production with partners from Spain, France, and Belgium. This marked an important step for Indian animation, highlighting its growing recognition in the global film industry.
The creators are also working to expand the world of ‘Neelu’ beyond the feature film. Plans are underway for a graphic novel and a webtoon series, which will help the story reach wider and younger audiences and build long-term global interest.
‘Neelu’ has already received early angel investment from Los Angeles and is currently being translated into French to access further European funding. These developments show the increasing international trust in Indian animated projects.
Saraswathi credits WAVES Film Bazaar 2025 for providing a strong support system, meaningful industry connections, and global exposure. ‘Neelu’ stands as a clear example of how WAVES Film Bazaar continues to support Indian creators and help culturally rooted stories travel beyond borders and reach global audiences.
