Vigilance raids indicate systematic bribe solicitation by engineer

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance on Wednesday unearthed huge assets disproportionate to known sources of income during raids on properties linked to an engineer of the Water Resources department. The tainted official is Additional Chief Engineer of Central Irrigation Circle, Rajesh Chandra Mohanty.

The raids were carried out at six places across four districts. The cash was found in multiple envelopes, each marked with references to specific projects and agreements, indicating systematic bribe solicitation by Mohanty.

“Simultaneous searches were conducted by teams led by 1 additional SP, 11 DSPs, 9 inspectors, 8 ASIs, and other supporting staff on the strength of search warrants issued by Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack,” a Vigilance release said.

Assets detected so far in the name of Mohanty and his family members include a palatial triple-storey building over 3000 sqft area at Baramunda Housing Board Colony, Lane-8, Bhubaneswar; one farm house along with a double-storey building over 4000 sqft area, spread over 1.71 dcml at Bimbol, Bhapur, Dhenkanal; 5 valuable plots including one at Bhubaneswar and four at Bimbol, Bhapur, Dhenkanal, Rs 6,23,000 in cash, deposits amounting to Rs 60.09 lakh, two four wheelers (Hyundai Sportz & Honda City) and as many two wheelers.

The release added that flight tickets worth Rs 13.47 lakh pertaining to Mohanty’s travel are under verification. The Vigilance Technical Wing is conducting the measurement and valuation of the buildings, farmhouses, and plots. The seized gold ornaments were being weighed when the report was filed.
