Six-lane Cuttack Ring Road corridor to be expanded further

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Works Department has unveiled plans to transform the Cuttack ring road along the Kathajodi River into a six-lane corridor, stretching 7 km from Khannagar to Judicial Academy Chhak.

The project will go ahead with a budget of Rs 245 crore. It aims at easing chronic traffic congestion along vital stretches of the city and bolstering urban connectivity.

Notably, construction on this ambitious road project will begin post-monsoon, targeting completion within 18 months, added the reports. Preliminary work, including feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and land surveys, has reportedly concluded.

The upgraded corridor is expected to serve not only as a critical arterial route but also as a protective embankment against monsoon flooding in low-lying areas. Further, the expansion will decongest inner-city traffic, improve access to residential and institutional zones, and stimulate local commerce.

This project aligns with broader efforts to enhance Cuttack’s infrastructure. In April, the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) proposed a 200-acre eco-friendly beautification plan for the Kathajodi riverbank near Baranga tehsil.

Over 60 percent of the area will prioritise plantations while the remainder will host parks, playgrounds, and open gyms. The proposal, pending state approval, adheres to National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines and ecological preservation norms.

Earlier in January, the state government greenlit the Rs 220 crore Mahanadi Riverfront project, modelled after Gujarat’s Sabarmati Riverfront.

According to reports, the first phase will develop a 3.5-km stretch at Rs 38 crore, featuring parks, cultural centres, and heritage villages.

Additionally, a dedicated 34-acre segment will enhance the iconic Baliyatra festival grounds, boosting tourism and local commerce.
