SC Collegium recommends transfer of 21 High Court judges

New Delhi: In major judicial reshuffle, the 5-judge Supreme Court collegium led by CJI B R Gavai, in its meeting held on May 26, recommended transfer of 21 High Court judges.

Among those transferred is Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, who has been shifted from Gauhati High Court to Orissa High Court. The Orissa HC currently has 18 judges and Justice Harish Tandon took oath as its new Chief Justice on March 27.

This is being seen as one of the biggest-ever exercises, relating to transfers in constitutional courts. However, these recommendations are subject to approval by the Union Government. Once approved, the judges will be relieved from their current postings and assume duties at their new High Courts in due course.

According to reports, the collegium has also recommended the elevation of three high court judges- Karnataka High Court Chief Justice NV Anjaria, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, and Bombay High Court judge AS Chandurkar- to the top court and proposed the appointment of five others as chief justices of various high courts.
