Baleshwar: In a late-night robbery, unidentified miscreants allegedly uprooted an ATM by tying it to a Mahindra Thar SUV, dragged it away, broke it open at a secluded location, and fled with the cash in the district early on Saturday. The incident took place at around 2.30 am at Tudigadia Bazaar under Khaira police limits.
According to preliminary information, more than five men arrived at the ATM kiosk in a black Mahindra Thar. They allegedly tied the ATM to the vehicle with a rope, forced open the kiosk’s entrance, uprooted the machine, and dragged it away from the site.
The accused are believed to have taken the ATM to a secluded location, where they broke it open and escaped with the cash. They later abandoned the damaged machine by the roadside before fleeing.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed nearby. The footage shows the miscreants dragging the ATM behind the SUV. Police are examining the CCTV footage to identify the accused and trace the vehicle used in the robbery. The exact amount of cash stolen is yet to be ascertained.
Khaira police are coordinating with bank officials to determine how much money was inside the ATM at the time of the theft. The robbery has sparked concern among local residents.
Locals alleged that several theft and robbery incidents have been reported in the area over the past few months and blamed inadequate police patrolling for the rise in criminal activities. They urged the police administration to strengthen security measures and intensify night patrols.
After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and recovered the abandoned ATM. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
