Ahmedabad: For the first time in 18 years, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy on Tuesday as it won by 6 runs in the final clash with Punjab Kings (PBKS).
They’ve come close so many times, and now, at the 18th attempt, they’re IPL champions. RCB has reached the IPL final thrice (2009, 2011, 2016) but returned home without a trophy on all three occasions.
On the other hand, Punjab earned a spot in the final for the first time in 11 years. In 2014, Punjab made its way into the final but fell short against the eventual winners, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
In total, seven teams have lifted the IPL trophy over the 18 editions of the annual tournament — one of them is the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. Two teams weren’t part of the tournament (Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans) when the league began in 2008.
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have won the most IPL trophies with five IPL titles each. Mumbai Indians won in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, while Chennai Super Kings won in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. They are followed by Kolkata Knight Riders with three IPL titles in 2012, 2014 and 2024.
Batting first, RCB’s performance was a mixed bag. Rajat Patidar & Co amassed 190 runs in 20 overs. However, RCB showcased total dominance with the ball. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, who was the inform batter, was dismissed at just 1 by Romario Shephard. Ultimately, RCB won the battle of the reds by defeating PBKS by 6 runs.
Score:- RCB: 190/9 & PBKS: 184/7
