Rayagada court sentences man to 10 years for raping on divyang woman

Rayagada: The Rayagada Additional District and Sessions court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping and attempting to murder a divyang woman in Boriguda village under Chandili police limits. Judge Alpona Swain also directed the convict, Babula Kulisika, to pay Rs 4 lakh compensation to the survivor.

The incident dates back to October 31, 2024, when the accused forcibly dragged the victim to his brother’s house and committed the crime. A written complaint was lodged on November 5, 2024, leading to Chandili Police registering Case No. 285/24. Following investigation and submission of the chargesheet in January 2025, the case was transferred to the Rayagada court.

During the trial, statements of 17 witnesses were recorded. After examining all evidence, the court found Babula guilty under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The prosecution was represented by APP Rajat Ranjan Khatua and advocate Satya Narayan Pradhan.
