Bhubaneswar: In line with India’s commitment to transition to sustainable energy, the Odisha government has signed an agreement between Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (OHPC) and WAPCOS Ltd. for project management consultancy services for the 600 MW Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project (UIPSP).
The project, located at Mukhiguda, aims to provide a huge energy storage system that pumps water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during surplus power availability and releases it to generate power during peak demand periods. This will help balance generation and demand, ensuring power system stability.
The UIPSP will have an underground powerhouse with four reversible-type Francis hydroelectric units, each with a capacity of 150 MW, totalling 600 MW. The project will operate in both pumping and generating modes, circulating water between the two reservoirs.
Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said, “This collaboration marks a crucial step in advancing Odisha’s energy sector while ensuring efficiency and sustainability.” The project is part of India’s broader goal to achieve 500 GW of installed capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030.
The proposed PSP will have an underground powerhouse located near the lower reservoir, equipped with four vertical-axis reversible-type Francis Hydroelectric units having capacity of 150 MW each and will operate in pumping as well as generating mode in different times of a day in cycle by circulating water between above two reservoirs.
The agreement was signed in the presence of senior officials from the Water Resources, Energy, OHPC, and WAPCOS departments. DC-cum-ACS Anu Garg and Principal Secretary, Energy Vishal Kumar Dev were also present.
