Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s tribal hill-grown coffee is set to reach an international audience as 100 per cent Arabica speciality coffee from the state has been included in a special goodie bag prepared for journalists and delegates attending the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The two-day summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13, with around 1,200 to 1,300 journalists expected to arrive in the national capital to cover the event. A large number of them will be from BRICS member and partner countries.
The special hamper features nine products sourced from different parts of India, highlighting the country’s local culture, food and handicrafts. NDTV journalist Simrin Gupta showcased the contents of the hamper in an Instagram video, describing it as an example of India’s push to promote local products at an international platform.
Among the items, the speciality coffee from Koraput of Odisha has drawn attention. Gupta, while unboxing the hamper, said the coffee smelled “really good”, highlighting its inclusion alongside other regional products.
The hamper also includes sattu and makhana from Bihar. Sattu, made from roasted gram, is known for its high protein content, while makhana has emerged as one of India’s popular snacks.
A block-printed stole from Gujarat is another highlight of the hamper. The kit also contains a coffee mug and a tote bag equipped with an in-built charging port, allowing journalists to charge their electronic devices while carrying it.
The inclusion of Odisha’s speciality coffee provides the state’s coffee-growing regions an opportunity to gain visibility among an international gathering of journalists and delegates.
To facilitate media coverage of the summit, the government is also setting up a dedicated International Media Centre at Bharat Mandapam. The facility will provide journalists with access to information and support for reporting on the summit.
The expanded BRICS grouping currently has 11 full members: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE. It also has 10 partner countries: Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
