Bhubaneswar: A branch of the prestigious National Investigation Agency (NIA) will be set up in the Capital City in Odisha soon. The Home Department of Odisha government has issued a notification in this regard.
As per sources, the NIA branch will initially function at VSS Nagar in Bhubaneswar. A SP equivalent rank officer will be appointed as the head of the branch. The branch of NIA will help quick investigation of criminal and terrorism activities in Odisha.
Earlier, Union home minister Amit Shah had announced that the government would set-up branches of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in all the states to deal with terrorism cases. The Minister had also asked the states to join hands with the Centre in dealing with borderless crimes, cross-border terrorism and organized crimes.
Currently, NIA has 15 branches in Delhi, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Raipur, Jammu, Chandigarh, Ranchi, Chennai, Imphal, Bengaluru and Patna. NIA has been given extra territorial jurisdiction powers as well as authority to confiscate the property acquired by terrorists.
