Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police has issued a strict directive prohibiting its personnel from charging private electric vehicles using electricity supplied to office buildings.
The department has also ordered a crackdown on unauthorised power connections from office premises to residential quarters and barracks, citing misuse of government electricity and rising power consumption.
In an official order issued to all heads of police establishments across the State, the department said it had noticed that electricity from office buildings was being illegally extended to residential quarters and barracks in several police establishments.
The order specifically noted that some police personnel have been charging their personal electric vehicles using electricity from office premises. According to the department, this has significantly increased electricity consumption and imposed an avoidable financial burden on the government.
The police headquarters also observed that, in some cases, occupants of residential quarters and barracks located adjacent to office buildings were drawing electricity from office power supply to avoid paying their own electricity charges. Such unauthorised use of government electricity has been strictly prohibited.
The directive further highlighted another concern, stating that police personnel, particularly in police barracks, have been using electric heaters for cooking. The department warned that this practice leads to excessive electricity consumption and poses serious fire hazards.
To enforce the order, all Heads of Police Establishments have been instructed to conduct thorough inspections of their respective office premises and ensure that no unauthorised electricity connections exist between office buildings and residential quarters or barracks. They have also been directed to instruct all police personnel under their jurisdiction to immediately discontinue these practices.
