Odisha junior teachers hit Bhubaneswar streets demanding job regularisation

Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of junior teachers descended upon the streets at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in the Capital City to voice their demands for the regularisation of their jobs.

The teachers, representing various schools across the state, seek immediate regularisation of their positions and threaten mass protest if their demands are not met.

Holding placards and chanting slogans, the protestors called upon the government to regularize their positions. They argued that securing their employment not only benefited them but also enhanced the quality of education available to students by ensuring a stable and committed teaching workforce. “Many of us have been working for years without any certainty of our employment,” alleged a protesting teacher.

“Three years back, the then BJD government had abolished the contractual recruitment. Former CM Naveen Patnaik made contractual employees permanent at one go and permanently abolished the contractual system. However, only we junior teachers were left out of regularisation. Neither the government bothered to abolish our contractual system nor provide us with any job security & benefits,” alleged a protester.

She further added, “The present government had assured us of the same salary for the same work and abolishment of contractual jobs for junior teachers. However, 7-8 months have passed by, so we are here to question the government.”

“If the government fails to fulfill our demands and regularize our jobs, then we will take this protest across Odisha. If needed, we will knock on the doors of the Centre. We will not back down until our demands are fulfilled,” claimed another teacher.

The government has yet to formally respond to the protest.
