Norway Chess: Gukesh beats Magnus who slams table after stunning loss

New Delhi: In the 6th round of the Norway Chess 2025, World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh defeated former World Champion Magnus Carlsen, bringing the score between them in the tournament to 1-1. Taking advantage of his opponent’s mistake in the game in which he fell behind, Gukesh managed to beat Carlsen for the first time in a classical contest.

At one stage, it seemed Carlsen was on course for a win with the black pieces, but Gukesh did not give up and continued to fight, and Carlsen’s advantage slowly disappeared. Then, when both were under time pressure, Carlsen made a huge blunder which cost him the game. With this win, Gukesh jumped to third spot with 8.5 points and now trails the world No.1 and American Fabiano Caruana by just one point.

Moments after Gukesh delivered the checkmate sequence, a visibly frustrated Carlsen punched the table, a rare public display of emotion from the five-time World Champion. The video of the moment has gone viral, capturing both the intensity of the match and the high stakes of this elite chess battleground.

Elsewhere, fellow Indian Arjun Erigaisi beat Chinese GM Wei Yi to make it a good day for India. Arjun remains the only player with a cent-percent Armageddon score at Norway Chess. Meanwhile, in the women’s section, Vaishali beats Koneru Humpy in Armageddon.
