New Delhi: India’s toy sector, once reliant on imports, has undergone a major transformation by shifting towards domestic production and exporting to 153 nations worldwide.
Speaking at the 16th Toy Biz International B2B Expo 2025 in New Delhi, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, credited this turnaround to sustained government support, the imposition of strict quality norms, and the growth of indigenous manufacturing hubs.
He emphasized that the Quality Control Order (QCO) has played a vital role in building a culture of quality within the country, empowering Indian toy makers to compete on a global stage.
Highlighting the strength of India’s 1.4 billion-strong population, the Minister noted that this vast consumer base provides an inherent advantage for scaling production. This domestic demand helps the industry reduce costs and enhance its global competitiveness.
To further strengthen India’s position in the international toy market, Goyal urged manufacturers to focus on three key elements—branding, packaging, and design. By excelling in these areas, he said, Indian toys can significantly boost their global presence and demand.
The Government is planning to bring another promotional scheme as Indian toy industry has the advantage of having a huge market, can use this to scale up.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Vocal for Local initiative, it was met with scepticism by many, as foreign products dominated consumer preference. However, under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the belief that Local can go Global, awareness and support for home-grown industries have steadily increased.
Startups developing innovative toy concepts have received significant support through the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, which has now been extended to 20 years. This, he said, has provided access to collateral-free loans for small businesses. He further informed that to promote domestic production, 18 toy clusters across the country have been supported by the Ministry of MSME.
