Bhubaneswar: The Sisir Saras Mela in Bhubaneswar, a popular national fair showcasing handicrafts, handlooms, and rural products, witnessed a series of thefts on Saturday. Sisir Saras has now been extended by 2 days to continue exhibitions till January 20.
Sources said more than 20 mobile phones were stolen from visitors during peak hours, creating panic among attendees. Many of those affected had come from different parts of Odisha and neighbouring states to enjoy the cultural and shopping experience, only to find themselves victims of petty crime.
Kharvela Nagar police station received multiple complaints and quickly detained two suspects believed to be involved in the thefts. Investigations are ongoing, with officers reviewing CCTV footage and deploying special squads to monitor crowd movement. Patrolling inside the mela grounds has also been intensified to prevent further incidents.
The thefts dampened the festive spirit of Sisir Saras, known for its vibrant stalls, cultural performances, and large footfall.
Authorities have assured the public that security arrangements will be strengthened. Plans include deploying more plainclothes police officers, installing additional CCTV cameras at entry and exit points, and running awareness campaigns to encourage visitors to remain vigilant.
