Koraput feels tremor of 4.4 magnitude

Jeypore: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale jolted Odisha’s Koraput district late Saturday night, sparking panic among residents across several towns and villages. The tremor struck at 11:31 p.m. at a shallow depth of 5 km.

Residents in Sunabeda, Semiliguda, Pottangi, Nandapur, Damanjodi, Lamtaput, Jeypore, and Baipariguda reported shaking buildings and rattling household items. Eyewitnesses described a loud rumbling sound that accompanied the tremors. Many rushed out of their homes in fear, seeking safety in open spaces.

The quake’s impact extended beyond Odisha. Tremors were felt in parts of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, including Araku Valley, Paderu, Pedabayalu, and Hukumpeta. People in these regions also experienced brief shaking, adding to the widespread alarm.

Authorities confirmed that no casualties or major damage have been reported so far. However, officials continue to monitor the situation closely. The incident has reignited discussions about preparedness and the need for stronger awareness programs in earthquake-prone regions.
