Five killed, over 20 injured as tourist bus overturns in Nayagarh

Nayagarh: At least five people were killed and around 40 others injured when a tourist bus carrying them overturned in Odisha’s Nayagarh district.  The deceased have been identified as Hari Patra, Laxmi Patra, Suprabha Sahu, Sumati Sahu who are residents of Berhampur and the driver.

As per information, the mishap took place around midnight on Friday. The tourist bus, which was carrying around 60 passengers, overturned near Hanuman Ghati at Daspalla.

According to sources, the vehicle which was taking passengers from Berhampur to the tourist spot Harishankar lost control at a sharp turn near Takera ghat and overturned after hitting a boulder. While some passengers were thrown out of the vehicle, many remained trapped under it.

Officials from Daspalla and Banigocha police stations along with fire services teams and ambulance immediately reached the spot after receiving information and launched an operation using gas cutters to safely rescue the passengers trapped underneath the bus.

The injured were taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Daspalla. Fifteen of them were later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital at Nayagarh due to their critical injuries.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The bodies of the five deceased passengers have been sent for post-mortem examination.
