Five arrested in Balianta mob lynching case

Bhubaneswar: A day after the mob lynched a 32-year-old Government Railway Police (GRP) constable to death in full public view over allegations of sexually assaulting two young women in Balianta, Commissionerate Police on Friday arrested five persons in connection with the case.

The barbaric incident, which took place near Ramachandrapur under Balianta police limits, sent shockwaves across the State. Videos circulated widely on social media showed scenes of extreme violence linked to the incident.

Swain belonged to Moujpur village under Olatpur police limits in Cuttack and was serving as a GRP constable in Cuttack district. His friend, Om Prakash Rout, was rescued by police. He is in a stable condition and remains under detention.

Swain and Rout had a face-off with the two girls over some trivial matter and then they allegedly chased them on their motorcycle and later rammed their scooter before being caught by locals. Rout managed to escape, but Swain, also a fitness trainer and bodybuilder, was brutally assaulted in the presence of police personnel. He was later shifted to Balakati Community Health Centre and subsequently moved to Capital Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police have registered two separate cases in this connection. The first is based on the woman’s complaint against Swain and Rout. The second is a murder case filed on the complaint of Swain’s family. Five people have been arrested so far. CCTV footage from the area is being examined, said police.

Meanwhile, Odisha State Commission for Women Chairperson Shovana Mohanty visited the incident site. She assured an impartial probe and strict action against those found guilty. “I will also meet the families of the two women,” she said, noting that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed authorities to take stringent measures in the case.

Odisha DGP YB Khurania and the DCP also visited the crime spot to oversee the investigation.
