Elon Musk confirms India visit after call with PM Modi

New Delhi: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is set to visit India later this year, following a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement comes as Tesla prepares to make its long-anticipated entry into the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market.

Musk, who also leads the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under former President Donald Trump, posted on X (formerly Twitter) expressing his gratitude, calling it “an honour” to connect with the Indian leader. His visit is expected to reinforce growing U.S.-India cooperation in technology and trade.

Prime Minister Modi, in his X post, shared that the two discussed a wide range of topics, including those covered during their Washington DC meeting earlier this year. He emphasized the “immense potential” for collaboration in technology and innovation, reaffirming India’s commitment to stronger U.S. ties.

The conversation precedes U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s scheduled India visit from April 21 to 24, highlighting increasing bilateral engagement at both political and commercial levels.

According to Bloomberg sources, Tesla plans to ship a few thousand EVs to a port near Mumbai in the coming months. The company is likely to begin sales in major metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore by Q3 2025. Hiring for showroom and delivery roles has already begun.

During their in-person meeting in February, Elon Musk gifted PM Modi a Starship hexagonal heatshield tile. That symbolic moment marked a turning point in Tesla’s India journey, now gaining momentum amid ongoing tariff discussions between New Delhi and Washington.

Tesla’s entry comes at a time when India is actively promoting electric mobility. The collaboration is expected to bring technological innovation, boost clean energy initiatives, and open new investment avenues between the two nations.
