Cuttack: In a renewed effort to tackle growing sanitation issues in the city, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has announced a structured penalty system targeting individuals and commercial establishments responsible for littering public spaces.
The move comes amid increasing public concerns about garbage mismanagement, choked drains, and deteriorating civic hygiene.
According to The New Indian Express, the civic body has approved a proposal to impose a Rs 100 fine on individuals found throwing garbage on roads, and Rs 200 on traders and shopkeepers violating cleanliness norms.
The penalties, approved by the CMC council following a proposal from its health standing committee, are expected to act as deterrents and bring discipline to the city’s waste disposal practices.
Further, repeat offenders will face doubled penalties, reinforcing the city’s zero-tolerance stance towards public littering. A dedicated enforcement team, comprising 15 members and led by a sanitary inspector, will be deployed to monitor violations and collect fines across the city, said the reports.
Before enforcement begins, the CMC plans to launch awareness campaigns in all 59 wards of the city. The drive will educate residents, vendors, and business owners about the importance of responsible waste disposal and the new penalty system.
The steps come after an unfortunate scenario of many residents and roadside vendors continuing to dispose of waste indiscriminately, often throwing garbage into open drains despite the deployment of garbage collection vehicles and twice-daily road sweeping.
The issue not only clogs drainage systems but also worsens waterlogging during rains, a recurrent issue in the city.
