BMC proposes biogas plant in city for sustainable waste management

Bhubaneswar: In a move towards sustainable waste management, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to set up a green energy biogas plant at the city’s largest retail and wholesale market, the Unit-I haat.

The facility, designed to process up to three tonnes of organic waste daily, will be set up on 3,500 square feet of land to be identified and provided by the civic authority. An agency will be selected to build, operate, and maintain the plant for a period of five years.

The BMC aims to generate electricity from the biogas plant and supply it to the power grid, enhancing the financial viability of the initiative.

Reportedly, a tender has already been floated to identify a suitable agency, with detailed specifications being outlined for the project.

The proposed biogas plant at Unit-I haat aims to process organic waste directly at the source, Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das told TOI. She noted that the market currently generates a significant volume of green waste, which is being handled by the city’s micro-composting centres.

The BMC Mayor further said that a specialised agency will be selected through a competitive bidding process to set up and operate the plant. The BMC reportedly intends to complete the project within six months of awarding the contract.

Besides, the plant is expected to promote green energy by converting segregated organic waste into biogas, which will be used for generating electricity or for thermal applications, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The BMC, in December 2024, had inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oil India Limited (OIL) to set up a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Meherpalli area near Kesura in Bhubaneswar.

The plant was to be built at an estimated cost of RS 175 crore and produce 10 tonne of compressed biogas daily by processing 200 tonnes of waste.

Odisha Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushnachandra Mohapatra had then said that the construction of this project would be completed within two years.
