Bhubaneswar: Amid repeated disruptions, the Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly ended today. The House functioned for only five of its scheduled nine working days. Because of protests and uproar the Question Hour could not be conducted on any of the five days.
The Opposition disrupted proceedings over the amendment to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act, leading to repeated adjournments and disruptions in the House.
Chief Whip of the ruling party and Boudh MLA Saroj Kumar Pradhan moved a motion seeking adjournment of the Assembly citing the prevailing flood situation in the state. BJP MLAs Upasana Mohapatra and Laxman Bag supported the motion.
Following this, the Speaker adjourned the House sine die.
During the session, four important Bills were passed, including the Odisha State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Bill, 2026, the Indian Stamp (Odisha Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Odisha Jan Vishwas Bill, 2026.
During zero hour, members of the ruling party raised the flood situation in the state and highlighted the difficulties faced by people in affected areas.
The ruling side said several people were suffering due to the floods, with houses damaged and agricultural land affected. Members urged the Opposition to visit affected areas and assess the situation on the ground, and called for constructive discussions and suggestions on providing relief and assistance to affected people.
They also appealed to Opposition members to refrain from unnecessary sloganeering and focus on measures to help those affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, speaking about the Mahanadi water situation, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said there was currently no major threat from the river.
He said around 6.40 lakh cusecs of water was flowing into Odisha from the Chhattisgarh side, while around 4.49 lakh cusecs was being discharged. At Mundali, around 7.60 lakh cusecs of water was entering the barrage at 9 a.m.
The situation at Mundali was not yet a matter of serious concern, Pujari said. The Water Resources Department was taking necessary measures to ensure the water flow at Mundali did not exceed 10 lakh cusecs.
The administration has also made preparations in case the water level rises and some areas get affected. District Collectors, officials of the Water Resources Department, Rural Development Department and Revenue Department, along with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Fire Services, have been deployed at necessary locations.
The situation will improve further over the next 24 hours, the Minister added.
