Odisha Governor calls for collective efforts to address climate change

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Friday called for collective and immediate action to address climate change, saying environmental responsibility should become part of everyday life.

Addressing the third edition of the Earth Again Conference 2026, also known as Punashcha Pruthibi, organised by Sambad at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, Kambhampati said the theme “Gen-C” (Generation Climate) was meaningful as the future of the environment is closely linked to the younger generation.

He said climate change was already being felt through rising temperatures, irregular rainfall and declining water levels. “Today, even during autumn, we are experiencing the feeling of summer,” he said, adding that people could once clearly experience seasonal changes, which has become increasingly difficult.

The Governor also referred to melting glaciers and said the challenge before society was to pursue development without destroying natural resources.

“We have to use technology to protect our natural resources,” Kambhampati said, emphasising the role of young people in bringing about environmental change. He called for greater awareness and said the transformation must begin at the family level.

He urged people to adopt green energy and electric vehicles and said decisions for a sustainable lifestyle needed to be taken immediately. Such steps, he said, would not only help protect the environment but also contribute to protecting the country.

Kambhampati said electric vehicle charging had been made free for staff at the Governor’s Secretariat, helping reduce their expenses. He suggested that similar facilities should be provided to students on university campuses to encourage the use of electric vehicles.

The Governor also stressed the need to protect existing trees and plant more trees. He suggested that tree plantation should become part of celebrations and festivals throughout the year.

Kambhampati also linked the greater use of renewable energy with the country’s economy. He said increased use of renewable energy could reduce crude oil imports and strengthen the national economy.

Addressing universities across Odisha, the Governor recommended that they work towards getting their campuses green certified. He said he would like to see Utkal University achieve this when he visits the campus next. Kambhampati further said collaboration among institutions, students and the media could help turn environmental awareness into public participation and, ultimately, concrete action.

The inaugural session was attended by Odisha Minister for Odia Language, Literature and Culture Suryabanshi Suraj, Utkal University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chandi Prasad Nanda, Eastern Media Limited Chairman Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, and Sambad and Kanak News Editor Tanaya Patnaik.

The three-day conference is being organised at two halls of Utkal University. The main auditorium is hosting sessions focused on environmental development and related issues, while the MKCG Auditorium is hosting sessions dedicated to disaster management and preparedness.

Experts from Odisha, across India and abroad with specialised knowledge of climate and environmental issues are participating in the conference. The sessions will focus on climate change, its causes and impacts, the factors behind natural disasters, protection of the planet and the need for a greener and more sustainable Earth.

Environmentalists, intellectuals and students are also participating in the three-day event, which aims to provide a platform for discussions and exchange of ideas on pressing environmental and climate-related challenges.
