Bhubaneswar: A weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression and move towards the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast around the morning of September 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and lay over the west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal at 8.30 am on Monday.
The system is very likely to move further west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, the IMD said. It is then expected to strengthen into a deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the following 24 hours.
The weather system is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and reach near the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts around the morning of September 23, according to the forecast.
The IMD has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places in 11 districts for today. The districts are Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.
A yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in Balasore, Sundargarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
The IMD has also forecasted heavy rainfall at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh districts.
Such weather conditions are likely to prevail across Odisha till September 25 under the influence of the weather system.
