Rakhi Purnima: Odisha transport dept felicitates law-abiding drivers during road safety campaign

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Transport Department organised a special road safety awareness campaign in Bhubaneswar, linking the traditional message of Rakhi with a broader “Promise of Safety” for road users to mark Rakhi Purnima.

The campaign was organised at Esplanade Mall, where Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur felicitated drivers and riders who were found following traffic rules and driving responsibly. Appreciation certificates and gifts were presented to encourage responsible road behaviour.

As part of the initiative, two-wheeler riders with both the rider and pillion wearing helmets, car drivers using seat belts, and motorists carrying the required documents and complying with traffic rules were identified and appreciated.

The Transport Department regularly takes legal action against traffic violators and issues challans. However, officials said recognising citizens who follow road safety rules is an important part of the new campaign.

By publicly appreciating law-abiding road users, the department aims to encourage others to adopt safe driving practices and build a stronger road safety culture across Odisha.

Road safety experts Subrat Nanda and Amiyabala Parida attended the programme as guests. Members of Prajapita Brahma Kumaris also participated and extended their support to the awareness initiative.

Additional Transport Commissioners Diptiranjan Patra and Samarendra Patnaik, Joint Transport Commissioners Bikash Choudhury and Ramanivas Sirkha, senior police officer Umakanta Pradhan, Bhubaneswar-I RTO Manas Mishra and Bhubaneswar-II RTO Pranaya Mishra, among other officials, were present.

Transport officials appealed to citizens to wear helmets, use seat belts and strictly follow traffic regulations. They also urged motorists never to drive under the influence of alcohol and to act responsibly while sharing the road with others.

The department said the campaign seeks to reinforce the idea that just as Raksha Purnima symbolises a promise to protect loved ones, following road safety rules is also a commitment to protect oneself, one’s family and fellow road users.
