College students to get stock market & financial literacy training

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to improve financial literacy and enhance employability among students, the Odisha Higher Education Department has decided to introduce the NSE BFSI Skill Programme in universities and colleges across the State.

Under the programme, students will receive free training in the stock market, mutual funds, insurance, banking and financial transactions. In the first phase, the scheme will be launched in 97 selected colleges and universities located within a 100-km radius of major cities including Bhubaneswar, Brahmapur, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Jeypore, Kendrapada, Kendujhar, Rourkela and Sambalpur.

According to a notification issued by the department, the programme will be available to students pursuing B.Com, BBA, BMS, Economics, Commerce, MBA and M.Com courses. As part of the initiative, eligible students will also be offered a 30-hour professional certificate course in mutual funds at no cost.

The programme will be implemented in collaboration with the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSEIL) under the National Skill Development Mission. The initiative aims to equip students with practical knowledge of the financial sector while preparing them for career opportunities in banking, finance, insurance and investment services.

To ensure smooth implementation, every participating university and college has been directed to appoint a nodal officer, preferably a faculty member from the Commerce, Management or Economics department. The Higher Education Department issued the implementation guidelines on July 15, 2026, and asked vice-chancellors and college principals across the State to take immediate steps to roll out the programme.
