Malkangiri: The long-standing aspiration of residents of Malkangiri district in Odisha for commercial air connectivity may soon become a reality, with local and aviation authorities preparing for a critical trial landing scheduled for July 22.
According to sources, a high-level delegation from the Aviation Department has arrived to conduct an exhaustive, infrastructure review to ensure maximum operational readiness. The visiting team includes Assistant Director of the Aero Safeguard division Niraj Kumar Naik and Assistant Director of Security Manoj Kumar Das, who are working alongside representatives from local district administration, the Public Works Department, and civil aviation authorities.
Sources further stated that the inspection team is conducting a meticulously detailed, point-by-point evaluation of the entire facility by closely examining the runway parameters, visual markings, and visibility factors required for safe flight operations. Key infrastructure checks include assessing the airport’s drainage systems to prevent water-logging. Officials are also reviewing perimeter security measures to eliminate the risk of stray animals, such as dogs or wild animals, entering the runway area.
“Inspection is underway and we can confirm the date of the trail run only after assessing its feasibility,” Naik told reporters.
When questioned about the definitive timeline for regular commercial flights, he maintained a cautious approach. “The team has just arrived, so it is too early for us to comment. We are currently conducting an initial assessment to identify any deficiencies, beginning with the runway. Our inspections will continue through today and tomorrow, and we will be able to provide a definitive update following a comprehensive debrief on Tuesday,” he added.
