Youth dies after being swept away in flooded drain

Sambalpur: Continuous rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system left Sambalpur inundated on Monday, claiming the life of a 35-year-old youth, Surendra Mahana, who drowned after being swept away in a drain near Sankarma village. Another youth managed to reach the bank safely.

The district recorded 220 mm of rainfall, with Sambalpur city and surrounding blocks facing severe waterlogging. Roads turned impassable as floodwaters entered residential areas including Bhutra Khadiapada, Daldalipada, Keutpada, and Kushtapada. Colonies such as Gopalmal, Subhashree Vihar, and Poddar Colony also reported water entering homes due to faulty drainage and poor urban planning.

Local residents complained that despite earlier drainage cleaning efforts, rainwater mixed with clogged drains flooded houses and streets. Bus stands remained submerged, raising concerns over the usability of electric buses. Major roads across the city, from Mina Bazaar to Khetrarajpur underpass, were covered with two feet of water, halting traffic.

District officials, including the Collector and administrative teams, launched rescue and relief operations. Food distribution began at relief camps set up for affected families. The administration deployed multiple departments to assist residents and mitigate damage.

Citizens expressed frustration over repeated flooding during monsoon seasons, blaming poor infrastructure and drainage design. Several families in Maitri Vihar and other colonies reported water entering homes every year during heavy rains.
