Odisha Govt asks colleges to ensure drug-free campuses

Bhubaneswar: The Higher Education Department has taken strict measures to make all government and aided private college campuses in the State drug-free zones.

College principals have been instructed to ensure that no liquor, tobacco, narcotics, psychotropic substances, or any other drug selling outlet exists within a 500-meter radius of every educational institution. They have been asked to verify the same and submit a report.

The step has been taken in line with National Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) guidelines and aims to create a safe, healthy, and drug-free educational environment. All colleges have been directed to verify the 500-meter radius and upload the prescribed data on the HIMS portal by July 15.

As per the format issued by the department, colleges must provide details on whether any liquor shop or tobacco product sales center exists within 500 meters of the campus, and whether there has been any illegal drug trafficking or use.

If so, the name and location of the shop or place concerned must be submitted. The Higher Education Department has also instructed all Regional Directors of Higher Education to ensure compliance with the directive.
