Vedanta promotes tobacco-free communities in Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda: Reinforcing its commitment to preventive healthcare and community well-being, Vedanta Aluminium observed World No Tobacco Day through a comprehensive awareness drive in Jharsuguda, in collaboration with the district health department on May 31.

The initiative aligned with the World Health Organization’s global theme for 2026, ‘Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,’ and reached over 300 individuals across Brundamal, Budula, Gumkarma, and Bishadehi villages.

World No Tobacco Day aims to highlight the health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption while encouraging individuals and communities to adopt healthier lifestyles. In line with this year’s theme, Vedanta Aluminium’s awareness program focused on exposing the realities behind tobacco and nicotine addiction, particularly among vulnerable populations such as adolescents. It aimed to empower community members with the knowledge and support needed to make informed health choices.

The awareness sessions were led by medical experts from Vedanta Aluminum’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU), who engaged participants on the long-term health risks associated with tobacco consumption, practical pathways to quit tobacco use, the importance of early diagnosis and the benefits of adopting healthier lifestyles. Interactive discussions and counselling sessions also helped participants understand the links between tobacco use and health conditions such as oral cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses and other non-communicable diseases.

Speaking on the occasion, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium C Chandru said, “Through focused health awareness initiatives such as these, we aim to encourage informed choices, preventive healthcare practices and long-term well-being. Our partnership with local authorities helps extend critical health education to the grassroots, building healthier, tobacco-free communities.”
