CM Majhi lays foundation of JSW Utkal Steel project in Jagatsinghpur

Paradip: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the JSW Utkal Steel project worth Rs 65,000 crore at Dhinkia in Jagatsinghpur district, marking a major step towards industrial growth and employment generation in the State.

“Because of this project in Paradip, Odisha is going to become a steel hub. I have laid the foundation stone for the JSW Utkal steel project. Besides, the plan for a cement factory here, with a production capacity of 12 million tonnes, is on the anvil. The company will also set up a captive power plant. There will be a jetty of around 900 megawatt,” the CM said.

“After completion, the (JSW Utkal steel) project will generate employment opportunities for more than 32,000 technical and non-technical young men and women in the State. Ancillary and downstream industries will follow in the future, which will certainly help develop the region. The previous (BJD-led) government had shown dreams to POSCO to set up industries in the region in 2005. However, after 2012, the company was driven away from the State,” CM Majhi expressed.

“In 2017, JWS came to Odisha to set up its plant, but the process was very slow. For which, the foundation stone was not laid for a long time. Perhaps, the foundation would have been laid in 2028. Besides, after the BJP government assumed office in 2024, we expedited the process. The government gave priority to industrialisation and became a catalyst in the process,” the CM stated while addressing a huge gathering.

“By the year 2029, the ambitious project will start its production. Besides, giving importance to the region, we had requested the Central government to develop this region as an economic corridor. A proposal was sent to accept and develop the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip region as an industrial corridor,” CM Majhi further said.

“Fortunately, the Central government has already approved the proposal. A fund of Rs 5,000 crore has also been allocated for the economic corridor project,” the CM added.

Industries Minister Sampad Swain and JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal also joined the ceremony.
