Keonjhar: An 83-year-old woman of Anandapur had to be carried on a trolley by her son to claim her monthly government allowance. As part of a welfare scheme, people over the age of 80 are entitled to a monthly allowance of Rs 3,500.
Despite being above 80, Gur Jena, a resident of Anandapur town’s Ward No. 7, has been deprived of this benefit. For several days, Gur has been making the difficult journey from the municipal office to the sub-collector’s office in a trolley, hoping to receive her due allowance. However, her efforts have so far yielded no positive outcome.
“I’ve been coming to the Municipality office for the last five days. They keep telling us the money will be sent online, but they never deposit more than Rs 1000 into our account. They even threatened to remove our account. My mother is 83 years old, and we haven’t received more than Rs 1000 yet. Every time we ask, they say the process is complete through the computer and that the money has been sent. It’s nothing but excuses and scams,” said Bana Jena, Gur’s son.
“They are withholding the money, claiming we’re causing problems. I can’t even come here myself because I have difficulty walking,” said Gur.
In response to the complaints, the Anandapur Sub-Collector has assured that the allowance will be provided promptly, and the matter will be resolved without further delay. The incident highlights the challenges the elderly face in accessing government benefits in the State.
