Moquim floats OJC with eye on urban & rural polls

Bhubaneswar: In a significant development in the State’s political landscape, a new regional political party, the Odisha Janata Congress, was formally launched on Wednesday.

The new outfit was officially launched at a large public gathering held at the Exhibition Ground here under the leadership of senior leader Mohammed Moquim, who was expelled from the Congress last year. The event attracted widespread attention in political circles.

After the formation of the new party, Moquim announced that Odisha Janata Congress will participate in the next urban and panchayat elections. Moquim, as the founding president of the outfit, said the party aims to focus on youth participation and leadership. The formation of this new political outfit has sparked discussions in Odisha’s political circles, as it seeks to create a fresh platform and alternative voice in the state’s political landscape.

Significantly, Moquim’s daughter and suspended Congress MLA Sophia Firdous attended the new party’s inauguration ceremony. Sofia, who is the Cuttack-Barabati MLA, had attended the youth convention organised by Moquim in January this year.

She had expressed unequivocal support for her father and called upon the youth to join the movement for a developed Odisha.

Addressing the gathering, Moquim expressed confidence that the Odisha Janata Congress will resonate strongly with Gen-Z and first-time voters. He highlighted the importance of youth participation in shaping the future of Odisha and emphasised that the party will work towards inclusive growth and fresh opportunities.

Moquim stated that the party aims to build a distinct identity and offer a new direction for the state. He also revealed that discussions are ongoing with several prominent political figures who may join the party and strengthen its base. According to him, the focus will remain on long-term development rather than immediate electoral gains, as there are no upcoming elections in the state.
