Utkal University observes 107th birth anniversary of Sriram Dash

Bhubaneswar: The PG Department of Political Science, Utkal University here on Tuesday observed the 107th birth anniversary of Prof. Sriram Chandra Dash, the visionary inaugurator and the first Head of the department, in a dignified and intellectual gathering.

Prof. Dash remembered for laying the academic foundations of the department and nurturing generations of scholars, was honoured for his immense contributions to higher education and political science in Odisha. 

The occasion featured an engaging academic session graced by distinguished speakers including retired IAS officer Vivek Pattanayak as chief guest for the occasion. He delivered the keynote address on the theme ‘Indian Democracy vs. American Anarchy’.

He highlighted how India’s democratic institutions despite challenges continue to function with stability whereas the US has recently witnessed episodes of institutional strains, unrest and kakistocracy. His address was widely appreciated for its depth, balance and analytical clarity.

Guest of honour Prof. Brahmananda Satapathy, former Head of the department and currently Professor Emeritus at KISS, presented an insightful lecture on “Extension of Healthcare and insurance subsidies: A controversial issue in American Congress”.

Prof. Satapathy examined the ongoing debates surrounding healthcare reforms in the US, explaining how partition divisions have complicated the expansion of insurance subsidies. He also drew parallels with welfare policy-making in India, enriching the comparative understanding of welfare states.

The celebration was attended by current head of the department Prof. Seema Mallik, Associate Professor, Dr Swapna S. Prabhu, Assistant Professor Dr Nithyananda Barik and faculty member Umesh Chandra Nayak, along with students and research scholars.
